Description

This real Scotch ale is full bodied and rich. It has won multiple awards and has dark caramel notes with fruit notes continuing throughout.

First Impressions - Nose and Appearance

Old Jock isn't completely opaque but it is very dark. It pours nicely, leaving a decent creamy, slightly caramel coloured head on it, which does settle down a bit in time. This ale has high carbonation but looks quite thick and creamy. The aroma of this hits you with caramel straight away, as well as fruits like raisins and dates. A roasted malty character is definite here.

Taste

There is a lovely dark caramel flavour to this, which is rich and full of character. A dark chocolate note and roasted malt flavours are there too but there is generally no bitterness to it at all. There are fruity flavours like raisins, figs and dates but also a hint of black cherry as an aftertaste. This ale uses First Gold, Perle and Fuggles hops and a mixture of Pale Ale malts and Roasted Barley to create this wonderfully fully bodied Scotch Ale.

Body

This one has a nice creamy head on it and a nice carbonation to it. As time goes on these things generally die down a bit but are still there by the end. Despite this carbonation there is a heaviness to this, with a nice thicker and creamy feel to it.

Overall

SCORE: 4.5/5

Overall, I thought this Scotch Ale was fantastic and leaves me with no questions as to why it is an award winner. The mix between the malty caramel character, the creamy full body and the lingering aftertaste with no bitterness leaves you wanting more. A superb Scotch Ale!
