Windswept Brewery have been brewing since 2012 in Lossiemouth, Scotland. The brewery was created by two Royal Air Force pilots, who created the name Windswept to reflect the windswept beaches along moray coast and capture the sense of adventure that there is found there in the Scottish Highlands.

Description

This black lager from Windswept is a mix between a classic light lager and a dark ale with roasted barley giving it a chocolate malty character similar to a stout that you wont get from your typical lager. The lager is bottle conditioned.

First Impressions - Nose and Appearance

The lager presents a coffee and cocoa bean like aroma, With this there is too a sweetness, which steers it away from a dark bitterness. The chocolatey, malty character comes through as well as roasted coffee notes. Throughout this there a sweetness is present, suggesting it wont be as bitter as it could be. The general aroma is pleasant and bold which interestingly makes you think it is of higher ABV% than it actually is.

The lager is a light chocolate in colour, with a slight cloud to it. The bottle conditioning keeps it with fresh bubbles and good carbonation, leaving some head on it too, which keeps the aroma lively and vibrant.

Taste:

The chocolaty add depth to this lager that you may get from an ale or a stout, yet it is still light not too overpowering, giving it the best of both worlds. The barley has been roasted just enough, which also give it a sweetness to balance this roasted coffee flavour through. The hops used in this could be a european hop like Saaz as the hops are not too bitter in this, keeping it clean and crisp. There are also hints off cocoa beans, chocolate digestives, espresso and a general toasted character.

The aftertaste is pleasant with some lingering roasted notes and also a light bitterness, but not too strong on that at all.

Body:

Firstly, the mouthfeel of this lager is exactly that of your traditional lager. Despite its stout like complexity its managed to keep its crispness, which is unusual and very much something I enjoyed. It may only be 4.7% but this lager really packs a punch, giving the impression it could be stronger. It has a light body with relatively low viscosity keeping it light and with good levels of carbonation.

Overall

SCORE: 4/5

it's Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this lager and would recommend anyone to try it. Its light and crisp yet boasts notes of chocolaty and coffee. If you enjoy these flavours then it really is a must try!
